Join Food Justice NW Aurora and Soil Transformations in a day full of learning and planting native plants in NW Aurora DUG community gardens!
Native plants are well adapted to Colorado's clay soils, dry climate, and temperature extremes. Their deep root systems improve soil structure, increase water infiltration, support pollinators, and provide food for beneficial soil organisms. Native plantings can be incorporated into borders, pollinator gardens, food forests, and underutilized spaces within the community gardens.
We’ll have over 200 Colorado-native plants to put in the ground at 5 community gardens over Labor Day weekend! Help us get them planted and watered in, all while learning about: How to plant bare-root plants Benefits of native plants Selecting species that bloom across three seasons Water-wise gardening Supporting pollinators and beneficial insects Establishment and maintenance techniques Meeting place and time: APDC Community Garden: 1537 Alton St, Aurora, CO 80010 Sunday, 9/6 at 8:30am Other gardens we’ll visit and plant on Sunday: Sanctuary Community Garden: 9840 E. 17th Ave, Aurora CO 80010 Hinkley High School Community Garden: Located just off Chambers Rd., between 6th Ave and Colfax. Free parking is available along the street, but not in front of the apartment building next to the garden. RTD bus route 153 also stops next to the garden. We will be caravanning from garden to garden. Please contact us at info@foodjusticenwaurora.org if you need support with transportation, if you’d like to offer to carpool, or if you plan to join us late so we can let you know where to find us! Prepare for high temperatures and be prepared to be outdoors for the duration of the day. Please wear comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes. We recommend bringing a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. If you have a favorite shovel, spade, hand tool, or gloves, feel free to bring those too! All ages are welcome! If you plan to bring kiddos, let us know in advance so we can bring enough kid-sized gloves and tools.
